Mynetfone - simply the best thing I ever did on the internet - instead of spending heaps of money on making phone calls instead, I use my internet connection and save myself heaps of money!!
No kidding - my phone bill went down incredibly, and we are talking hundreds of dollars a quarter! Do yourself a favour and check out www.mynetfone.com.au
I have been a VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) user for approximately 6 years now - and I will never go back to the old PSTN phone line ever again! (if I can help it) I live in a rural area (Gympie) but I have a decent internet connection. I am with aaNet and have an ADSL 1+ internet connection, but this is overkill for VOIP, if you have a standard 1.5Mbps/256Kbit connection you can hold a very clean, very clear voice connection (multiple lines actually!)
How does it work? There is a server called a SIP server on the internet that you connect to and using a standard telephone handset you can make a phone call using this SIP server - your voice (analog) is converted to a digital stream - passed onto the SIP server, which in turn is passed onto another SIP server and then the digital stream is converted back to analog and passed onto the normal phone system.
And it is cheap!! Because your voice is converted to digital and then transmitted across the world there is no carrier cost, so say goodbye to STD phone calls - there is just no such concept any more (in fact the old PSTN network is like this too - just a good marketing job by Telstra to make us think that STD costs more)
I am able to ring my mother in Brisbane for 10c!! Thats right 10c for as long as I want (actually fair use policy caps this at 2hrs, but just hang up and ring again, only 20c for 4 hours now!) But go one better and buy your mother a mynetfone account and then the phone call is free!!
Yeah, I might save money, but will I have to compromise on quality of sound? No way! In fact I find that it is the opposite - my mother actually rings her mother on this phone (my grandmother) as the voice quality is better (and louder) than the traditional telephone call!
Plans start from $0 per month, check it out.

Have you backed up recently? I have had quite a few computers in lately that have been rendered useless because of virus infection.
